The Problem
Creating a trailer for our real-time strategy game, "Realm Rumble: Unleash Chaos and Conquer," presented a unique set of challenges. One of the most pressing issues was how to showcase the game's complex mechanics and high-fantasy elements in a short, engaging video format. The problem was twofold: first, how to capture the essence of the game without overwhelming the viewer, and second, how to do this without revealing too much of the game's plot and features. Failing to address these issues could result in a trailer that either confuses potential players or doesn't pique their interest, affecting the game's marketability.
Problem Solution
The root cause of the issue was the complexity of the game itself. "Realm Rumble" is not a game that can be easily summarized in a 30-second clip. To tackle this, I decided to focus on the narrative aspect, telling the story from the perspective of one of the architects in the game. This allowed us to showcase the game mechanics, the high-fantasy elements, and the multiplayer aspects in a coherent manner.
I used Unreal Engine's Sequencer to choreograph the trailer, ensuring that each scene was optimized for both visual appeal and performance. However, I encountered issues like screen tearing and unwanted UI elements appearing during the rendering process. To resolve these, I created a separate game mode specifically for rendering the trailer, which helped eliminate the unwanted elements and improve the frame rate.
The end result was a trailer that not only encapsulates the essence of "Realm Rumble" but also serves as an engaging narrative piece. Early feedback from testers indicates that the trailer has made them more interested in the game, confirming that the approach was effective.
